Depression

Some of the following nutrition from food as well as supplements may be recommended by Dr. Merigian at your appointment to help with your depression. Be sure to speak with Dr. Merigian before starting any supplement regimen.

  • S-ade-nososylmethionine (SAMe) may help support mood with few side effects. Dosages typically range from 400 t1600 mg a day. However, as little as 35 mg a day has been used successfully

  • DHEA is a natural human hormone that enhances brain functioning and promotes well-being. Dosages typically range from 50 mg (women) t100 mg (men) (shop at Natura-Alchem)

  • Pregnenolone is another natural human hormone that is often found in below-normal amounts in people with depression. 50-200 mg daily in divided doses

  • dl-phenylalanine can elevate endorphin levels in the brain which may elevate mood.

  • Tw500-mg capsules in the morning on an empty stomach and one 500-mg capsules in mid-afternoon on an empty stomach (shop at Natura-Alchem)

  • DMAE (found in sardines and other foods) has been shown to elevate mood and is even more effective when taken with vitamin B5

  • L-Tyrosine is used by the body to make the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, which play a role in elevating mood and keeping us alert. 500-1500 mg a day (shop at Natura-Alchem)

  • L-Carnitine is an amino acid that can alleviate depression in some people in doses of 1000 mg twice a day (shop at Natura-Alchem)

  • NADH enhances brain energy and has elevated mood in studies of people who took 5 t10 mg a day

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamin) deficiency can lead to depression and fatigue; 100 mg a day is recommended

  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiency can lead to depression; 100 mg twice daily as recommended

  • Vitamin B3 (niacin) converts tryptophan into serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that helps us stay happy. A single dose of 25 mg a day gradually increased incrementally t100 mg 2 or 4 times a day is recommended

  • Vitamin B6: (pyridoxine) is also needed for conversion of tryptophan to serotonin. A deficiency of B6 is often found in pregnant or lactating women and in alcoholics. Divided doses of 20 mg a day are recommended

  • Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) helps fight depression by inhibiting monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme that “attacks” and destroys certain neurotransmitters that help to elevate mood; 500 mcg sublingually, twice a day is recommended

  • Choline plays an important role learning and memory; 2000 mg a day in divided doses is recommended

  • Folic acid deficiency is common in many people with depression; 400-1000mcg a day
    Vitamin C deficiency has been found in many people with depression. Start with 1 gram (1000 mg) twice a day and gradually increase the dosage until you are taking at least 3000 mg twice a day for mood

  • Potassium is a mineral that has been linked to mood disorders. Unless levels are dangerously low in the body, potassium should be replenished by natural foods such as bananas, nonfat milk, oranges, and fresh peas.

  • St. John’s Wort (hypericum) has recently gained prominence in the United States as a natural antidepressant; 300 mg 3 times daily (with a standardized concentration of 0.3% hypericin) in divided doses is recommended. Sometimes 1200 mg per day is necessary to see a positive result

  • Ginseng is an overall tonic and rejuvenator, 400 mg daily in capsule form may be taken or brewed in a tea

  • Anti Depression Drops provides homeopathic aid in support of the coping mechanisms and adaptation from depressed mood. 10 drops should be taken every 10 minutes for no more than 3 hours, then hourly until symptoms subside or not exceed 12 hours. For chronic conditions, use 10-15 drops 3 times daily for a period not to exceed 6 weeks. Children 4-12: One-half adult dose. (shop at Natura-Alchem)

  • Guna Mood is a homeopathic medicine developed for patients experiencing mood swings, irritability, depression, seasonal affective disorder or other psychological dysfunctions. 10 drops 3 times a day should be taken

  • 5-HTP, 150-300 mg daily. This should be taken with Niacin and B-6 (shop at Natura-Alchem)
